The painting was made known by Angulo and Pérez Sánchez in 1969 from a black and white photograph, which led them to believe that it was an old copy of a lost original. It was then in Seville in the collection of a man dedicated to banking, Gonzalo Díaz Molero. Both scholars identified it with the painting exhibited at the Ibero-American exhibition of 1929 and described in its corresponding catalogue as: «No. 48. – The Imposition of the Chasuble on Saint Ildefonso.
